Dairy Free Restaurants in Tampa and St. Pete, Florida

Technically, I don’t have a dairy allergy, but I do have a severe intolerance to the protein in dairy—which is also different than being lactose intolerant, but that’s a topic for another day.

If you have a food intolerance or allergy, I know you know how challenging it can be to find places to eat that cater to your dietary restrictions. While gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan menu items are more common these days, it’s still a struggle to identify dairy free items on a menu. Often, I resort to ordering a vegan, even though I’m not vegan, simply because I know it will be dairy free.

Thankfully, I’ve found the Tampa Bay area to be very dairy-free friendly. My husband and I own a rental property just south of Tampa and we visit several times a year for extended periods of time.

Do I consider myself a Tampa or St. Petersburg expert? No. But we’ve spent enough time here and eaten out so many times that I can confidently say these are some of my favorite restaurants, eateries, and bakeries.

Best Places to Eat with Dairy Free Menu Items in the Tampa Bay Area

Armature Works

Armature Works is a food hall located along the Tampa Riverwalk. My go-to eatery here is Graze. The build-your-own bowl option makes dairy-free ordering easy.

On the Armature Works website, you can also view a vegan-only menu selection, if that helps.

Ulele

Located near Armature Works along the Riverwalk, ū•lë•lē is a stand-alone restaurant serving “native-inspired foods.” Its large indoor and outdoor seating areas add to the experience, with unique art and sculptures on display.

While some menu items can easily be made dairy free, you’ll also find a few plant-based options.

Charlie’s Steak House

For a high-end dinner, Charlie’s in Tampa is the move. I found this restaurant to be very accommodating to my dairy “allergy,” especially with the extensive meat and seafood entrees available.

While many of the side dishes do include milk or cheese ingredients, I was able to eat most of the vegetable sides.

Water + Flour

With a self-described “laid-back Cali-Miami vibe with a SoHo twist,” this spot on South Howard Ave serves casual fare—sushi, bowls, pizza, and more—for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. The menu includes vegan options, and some non-vegan meals can be made without dairy.

If there are bowls on the menu, I’m probably ordering one, so that’s my recommendation. But you aren’t limited here.

The menu also highlights gluten-free options, FYI.

Stella’s

This “homey daytime diner” in Gulfport is a gem. The menu leans southern comfort food with plenty of breakfast, brunch, dinner, AND vegan options.

Enjoy the outdoor seating and find out more about the restaurant’s namesake—a real-life nun.

Halelife Bakery

If you only try one spot on this list, make it Halelife Bakery in St. Pete, Tampa, or Dunedin. You’re welcome.

Yes, it’s a bakery, but you’ll also find savory breakfast items and pizza. Somehow, EVERYTHING on the menu is 100% gluten, vegan, dairy, egg, soy, peanut, and tree nut free. The donuts are a must, but don’t stop there!

And now, I’ll share a few Florida-based local chains that also cater to the dairy-free crowd.

Vale Healthy Kitchen

Located in the heart of downtown Tampa, this Florida-only chain offers build-your-own bowls, wraps, smoothies, and salads for lunch and dinner.

Vale is ideal for takeout or pickup orders. While seating is available, it is limited.

Naked Farmer

I love a locally-sourced menu, and Naked Farmer has one that features chef-curated plates and sides. Or, customize your own bowl. Ingredients are clearly marked with allergy information, including dairy.

Choose from locations in downtown Tampa, South Tampa, downtown St. Pete, and more.

Pacific Counter

Build-your-own poke bowl or roll at this fast-casual joint that offers plenty of vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free ingredients. And don’t skip dessert—a pineapple soft serve (aka. Dole whip).

You’ll find several location options in St. Pete and Tampa—though we ate at the one in Apollo Beach.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of dairy-free eateries in Tampa and St. Pete—and I welcome new recommendations in the comments.

For me, the dairy-free life has become an adventure, and I hope these options inspire you to eat more adventurously and confidently in Tampa Bay.
