Protein bars have been my adventure fuel of choice for yearssss. They’re portable and filling, and some brands actually taste good, too!
That last part is especially important. They MUST taste good.
But years ago, I learned that dairy was wreaking havoc on my gut—and I was upset. How could I give up some of my favorite foods—including my go-to protein bars?
I was sure I’d never find non-dairy alternatives that passed the taste test. I thought I’d have to settle for chalky, cardboard, and bland.
But I was wrong.
After trying lots of disappointing vegan and plant-based bars—because those are dairy free‐—my persistence paid off.
The bars I’m about to share surprised me in the best way. They’re so unbelievably delicious, that I never would have guessed they’re dairy free.
Below is my list of current favorite protein bars—WITH photos of the outside AND inside of each bar.
In case it helps, I also included a few nutrition facts from the label to show that these bars are a good source of protein, carbs, and fats.
Where Can You Buy These Protein Bars?
The best part (besides eating them!) is that they’re all available on Amazon or (likely) at your local grocery store.

Okay. I won’t keep you waiting any longer.
The Best Dairy-Free, Plant-Based, or Vegan Protein Bars
Misfits Vegan Protein Bars
Choosing a favorite brand is HARD, but if I was forced, my answer would be Misfits.
These bars remind me of a 100 Grand candy bar, with a crispy, chocolatey outside and gooey or nougatey inside.

My favorite flavor, hands down, is the Caramel Fudge, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.
In fact, this variety pack on Amazon is the perfect way to try several flavors to see for yourself.

Lenny & Larry’s Cookie-fied Protein Bars
My husband actually bought these first, but it took me forever to try one because I assumed they weren’t dairy free.

I mean, the cookies and cream flavor is studded with cookie bits and chunks of white chocolate. It also has a brownie-like consistency that is unlike any other protein bar I’ve ever eaten.

NuGo Vegan Protein Bars
Not all NuGo bars are vegan, but the ones that are vegan are in my regular protein bar rotation. Seriously. I can’t stop buying the dark chocolate pretzel (with sea salt) and the chocolate chocolate chip. (Yes, we’re talking double chocolate!)

And guess what? You can buy a variety pack of both flavors on Amazon.
These two NuGo bars are like a cross between a granola bar and rice crispy treat with a sweet, chocolate coating.

My honorable mention NuGo flavor is the chocolate mint. This flavor has a slightly different texture and shape. It reminds me of a crispy fudgy brownie, and the mint flavor perfectly balances the dark chocolate.
ALOHA Organic Plant-Based Protein Bars
Let me skip to the chase and recommend the peanut butter cup ALOHA. These bars are coated in a thick, chewy chocolate with a soft, peanut butter center.

I won’t lie and tell you they taste just like eating a Reese’s, but they are a solid win if you love the chocolate and peanut butter combo.

Not a pb and chocolate fan? The other ALOHA flavors are good, too.
Oh, and they’re organic!
CLIF Bars
Did you know CLIF Bars are dairy free?! Yup.
Love or hate the word, these bars are moist, dense, chewy, and filling. As the name implies, they’re ideal for a hiking or other outdoor adventure.

The chocolate chip are the OG for me. I am also partial to the oatmeal raisin walnut.
But don’t stop there. Try them all!

KIND Protein MAX Bars
MAX is right. With 20g of protein, these are a high-protein option.
They’re also the ultimate granola bar. One side is dipped in chocolate, and the other side is drizzled.
I’d start with the crispy chocolate peanut butter, but I have a feeling you’ll love them all.

No joke, I typically bring a stash of protein bars with me when I travel because I never know what the food situation will be at my destination. Work trip. Road trip. International vacation. I need backup snacks in every scenario, just in case the dairy-free options are limited. Unfortunately, it’s happened before.
Beyond travel and adventuring, these bars are also perfect for everyday snacking.
If you give any of my favorites a try, let me know what you think in the comments!
